01 Oct Essential Security Tips for Renters
Security should be top-of-mind whether you’re renting an apartment or a house. Your home should be your safe space. Moving into a rental property gives you a lot to think about, but before you start decorating and inviting people over to celebrate your new place, here are some security tips renters should consider.
Location matters
Before you even move into a rental property, you should consider the safety of your potential new neighborhood. To make this task easier, several websites and apps are available to search for the crime statistics of neighborhoods you are interested in. Other ways to check if your potential new neighborhood is safe include:
- Checking the neighborhood in the sex offender registry.
- Checking the city public department for a crime map.
- Contacting local law enforcement, which will allow you to access crime data and safety tips specific to the area.
- Joining community forums and social media groups that provide residents a platform to share safety concerns and experiences.
Building safety
In addition to choosing a neighborhood that meets your safety requirements, you also want to select a building set up to protect its residents. Check for security features of both the building and the suites. These can include things such as:
- Security cameras. Ensure they capture the front and back doors, garage entrances, hallways, and elevators.
- A doorman. According to Stealth Monitoring, 43% of Americans experienced package theft in 2020. This research included multifamily properties, both with and without a doorman. While a doorman can be helpful, employees are often overwhelmed with package management. Video surveillance can help pick up the slack.
- Smoke alarms and sprinkler system. Don’t forget to ask if they are checked regularly to ensure they are in working order. Some cities require by law that they be checked by the fire department annually.
- A peephole. Peepholes make it easy to see who is at your door without opening it to strangers.
- Ability to add more locks. Some buildings allow you to add your own locks, while others have a rule against it. Find out before signing the lease.
- Well-lit pathways around the building. You should feel safe coming and going from the building at any time of day or night. If you’ve only seen the building during daylight, go back when it’s dark to see if the lighting is adequate.
Additional safety tips for renters
Once you’ve moved into your new home, there are things that you can do to increase your personal safety and the safety of your belongings. Investing in a safe is an excellent way to keep valuables protected. Small safes can be hidden in a closet or under the bed.
Knowing escape routes in the event of a fire or other emergency is also important.
Don’t be shy about getting to know your neighbors. Knowing who lives in your building will give you more peace of mind. And, if you lock yourself out of the building, you can contact a neighbor for access. On cold winter days, this is especially reassuring. When you go out of town, you can let a trusted neighbor know so that they can keep an eye on things.
Consider investing in a home security system. Many renters like wireless systems because they are unobtrusive. You can even take the components with you if you move.
Putting safety first when looking for a new home will ensure you feel comfortable and secure in your rental.
