This means that once you move, you need to account for the security of both of these homes, at least as long as you still own the old property. Here are some security measures you should take during and after your move:
Be Discreet About Your Move
It’s normal to tell family, friends, and even colleagues about your move, but you should wait until after your move when possible to mention it to strangers or acquaintances. If you’re moving houses on your own, you want to spend as little time as possible doing so. The longer you take going back and forth, the more opportunity someone with ill intentions will have to notice.
A criminal who notices you moving can plan accordingly if they choose to break-in. If you can hire movers, this is your best bet as they can accomplish the task in one trip. If you can’t afford to hire movers (or prefer not to), enlist the help of family and friends so the move can be done in as few trips as possible. Have someone stay at each house throughout the process to deter potential burglars.
Continue to Secure Your Old House
Whether you still own your old house or remain under a lease, even if you’ve vacated the house, it is still your responsibility. Here are some safety measures to consider:
- Keep all doors and windows locked.
- Don’t immediately disconnect security systems or motion detector lights and keep security system stickers and yard signs up.
- Don’t hide keys outdoors. Leave a spare set with someone you trust.
- Stop delivery of mail and newspapers. These items piling up is a clear indication that no one is staying in the house.
- Continue lawn care. An unmaintained yard is another giveaway that no one is living there.
Secure Your New House
If your new house comes equipped with a security system, make sure that it’s working properly. Have a reputable security company evaluate the system and make sure it is up to code. If the house does not have a security system, now is the time to decide what type of security system will suit your needs. Possible security types include: security cameras, burglar alarms, motion sensor lights, and monitored home security. Some other security measures to consider:
- Change the locks. If possible, change the locks when moving into a new house because you don’t know who has copies of the keys.
- Add security stickers and signs around your house. They will deter criminals.
- Also consider life safety protection such as fire and carbon monoxide detection.
